6019 Vtg 1951 Don McLaughlin World Champion Calf Roper Trophy Saddle by Roy D Barnes
This is a vintage rare one of a kind handmade trophy saddle made by Roy D Barnes from Denver Colorado and awarded to the World Champion Calf Roper Don McLaughlin at Madison Square Garden in 1951. Don (1927-1994) was inducted into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame in 1979 for tie down roping and won several world championships. This saddle was awarded for his first world championship. He went on to win the world championship in 1952, 1953, 1954, and 1957 for calf roping. He won the world championship title for steer roping in 1960, 1963, and 1970. The saddle is maker marked Roy D Barnes Race and Rodeo Supply and the fenders are carved Worlds Champion Calf Roper 1951. There is a plate on the rear housing that is engraved with Don McLaughlin’s name and reads that the saddle was donated by CH Hyer & Son Boot Co. Olathe, Kansas. It has eight engraved sterling silver conchos marked sterling. It is floral tooled with a padded seat and the tree is sound. The seat size measures 15”. This saddle is all original with the exception of three strings and the stirrup hobbles that have been replaced. There is some surface cracking in the leather and the sheep skin lining is in bad condition as shown in the pictures. The saddle has been cleaned and conditioned. This is a nice old saddle with a lot of history. This would be a nice saddle to add to a collection.
